Should I Go to University of Florida
Should I Go to University of Florida Andrew earned his bachelors degree in entomology and nematology from the University of Florida. He specializes in science tutoring, biology tutoring, math tutoring, and numerous other subjects. If youre interested in attending the University of Florida, read on for his review: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Andrew: The University of Florida is located in the center of Gainesville, and has a more rural feel as you move away from town. The bus is the only option for public transportation. It is very good on campus, and runs well enough near campus; in truth, it is much easier to get around town with a car or bicycle. On campus, however, it is easier to get around on foot or bicycle due to the volume of student traffic. As with any city, Gainesville has good areas and bad areas. That being said, the main campus and midtown are generally very safe, well lit, and enjoy a reasonable police presence, even at night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Andrew: The faculty and staff are world class, and second to none in terms of supportiveness for their students, availability, and teaching ability. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Andrew: Dorm life was good while I lived there, although room quality varied substantially from one building to the next. For instance, some dorms had central AC that was always ice cold, others had window mounted units, and some had no AC whatsoever. All of the dorms are on campus and very close to most classrooms. Additionally, dining options are plentiful on and near campus, especially near midtown. Every dorm in which I lived would arrange social activities for the students, especially first-years, including massive water balloon fights, a volleyball and wrestling mudpit, and even eating contests. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Andrew: I began as a Biology major before switching to Entomology Nematology. I found that I had a great passion for studying insects, which are very diverse in the state of Florida. Most majors are quite well supported; I never had any difficulty scheduling time to meet with advisors or teachers any time I needed. UF provides great resources available for students who need help studying. One of my friends was a Mechanical Engineering major and used these frequently. He had nothing but good things to say about the campus tutoring sessions. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Andrew: When I entered college, I was painfully shy, and yet I seemed to have no difficulties in meeting great people during my first year as a student. The friends I made during freshman year are still very good friends even to this day. Most students are not involved in Greek life; however, with the very large number of students attending UF, there is a sizable Greek population. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Andrew: With a reputation as being the Harvard of the South, the University of Florida attracts top companies for recruitment of its graduates. I have seen and attended numerous recruitment fairs at UF. Additionally, most students in my major were made aware of job openings through departmental email or other avenues. I can attest firsthand to how these resources helped me to secure highly desirable positions in my field. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Andrew: Study areas can sometimes be quite crowded due to the number of students at the university, especially during exams. Generally, though, the libraries and study areas are more than adequate in terms of space. Furthermore, the libraries are located close to the main area of campus, and are easy to access. Describe the surrounding town. Andrew: There is something for everyone in Gainesville. Because UF is located in central Florida, the surrounding towns are quite rural. There are numerous small natural preserves and parks near UF, most with great hiking trails and places to go camping, fishing, and hunting. One of my personal favorite places to go was Lake Wauburg, where there is a small beach. At the lake there are sailboats, kayaks, and paddle boats that can be taken out with a student ID. There is also a disk golf course, a climbing wall, and beach volleyball courts. There is a busy (but modestly sized) midtown and slightly larger downtown, with plenty of variety in terms of nightlife, music, and dining. Both of these areas are relatively close to campus, and are regularly frequented by students. Pool parties hosted by local radio stations are very common in the larger apartment complexes during the warmer months. For those who enjoy sports, the home games for the Florida Gators can be a great time; alumni, students, and fans come from miles around to tailgate and see the games! How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Andrew: The size of the student body is over 50,000 students. This is a very large number of people concentrated in a campus that is two miles square, with most classes concentrated in a cluster of buildings probably one square mile in area. Many of the general, lower-level courses had 200-300 students; in fact, I did take one class that had 500 students in a massive auditorium. Once I got through these, my upper-division classes were typically much smaller, especially in my entomology courses. I personally preferred these smaller classes, but I never felt that the professors of the larger classes were inaccessible or impersonal toward their students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Andrew: The class I enjoyed the most was a course on insect classification. I still chuckle to think of how drastically this one class changed the course of my life. I was just out of my sophomore year and had just added entomology as a minor, thinking that it would help to beef up an application to medical school. Part of the course involved building a sizeable insect collection. Many students hated this part of the class because it was very time consuming and involved handling live insects; I ate it up. One day, as I was returning from a collecting trip, I found myself musing; thinking: I wish I could do this for the rest of my life. The next day I changed my major to entomology and never looked back. Now, some seven years later, I am pursuing a PhD studying the evolutionary biology and biomechanics of insects, and loving every minute of it. I would never have had this opportunity were it not for the great selection of courses that are available to undergraduates at the University of Florida. Check out Andrews tutoring profile. 2 Questions Every Songwriter Should Be Able to Answer
2 Questions Every Songwriter Should Be Able to Answer Suzy S. Not sure where to start when it comes to writing songs? Check out these songwriting tips from Austin, TX teacher Gfire M... I started writing songs fairly early on at age 11, but I never thought about songwriting technique until later, when I studied with teachers from Berklee College, and in Los Angeles and Nashville. I now have songs that have been played on more than 200 radio and television programs around the world, including UnderCurrents, a syndicated program that airs on more than 65 NPR radio stations in the United States. It was a natural progression to teach what I know about songwriting to my singing, piano, and guitar students who wanted to express themselves in an individual manner. Here are two questions to ask yourself before writing a song: 1. What is your song about? It is best if you can express the idea you want to convey in a single sentence. Songs are very short, averaging 3-5 minutes in length, so you really want to stay focused on one idea. Some examples are: âYou and I will never, ever, ever, get back together,â âWhat doesnt kill you makes you stronger,â and âYour love lifts me higher and higher.â Write your sentence on the top of the page you are using to write your new song! 2. What song formula are you going to follow? If you study songs that you like, you will notice that there are formulas that a lot of songs follow. One common formula is verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. (Check out Kelly Clarksonâs âStrongerâ for an example of this formula.) So if we call the verse âA,â the chorus âB,â and the bridge âC,â the formula would be called A, B, A, B, C, B. Start with this formula for your first song all you really have to write is two verses, a chorus, and a bridge. Other Songwriting Tips to Consider If your first song isnt as good as the ones you hear on the radio, dont worry itâs your first song! If you write a new song every month this year, youâll have 12 songs and you will get better and better at really expressing what you want to say and developing your songwriting voice. You should also study your favorite bands and songwriters analyze the structure of your favorite songs and then practice writing a song that follows that same structure. Again, the more you practice writing songs and I do recommend completing each song, whether you think it is any good or not the more youll refine your technique. Find a Songwriting Teacher A teacher can give you even more songwriting tips as you work on your songs. Just as you would take months or years of singing, guitar, or piano lessons, if you book lessons with a good songwriting teacher and invest a minimum of three months of lessons and practical work (i.e. write and finish one song per month), you will get better much faster than if you are on your own. You already are a unique person with plenty of stories and experiences to share. Now give yourself the chance to be the songwriter you always dreamed of being!! Gfire teaches music theory, opera voice, piano, singing, and songwriting in Austin, TX. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music from University of Maryland, as well as her Master of the Science of Singing from Ernest George White Society. Learn more about Gfire here! How To Improve Your GRE Score
How To Improve Your GRE Score Update: Some of this article's advice is now outdated due to changes in the GRE. A more recent article on the exam can be found here.First things first: the GRE is for graduate schools, but not for MBA programs (that requires the GMAT); however, some business schools may accept it. Background: The GRE is a computer-based test that generates questions based on your previous answers. If you continue to correctly answer questions, they will get harder. The test has three sections: quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and analytical writing. The test was updated in August 2011 to more accurately reflect the current thinking skills needed in graduate schools. The quantitative reasoning/verbal reasoning sections are now scored on a 130-170 range with one point increments. The writing section is still scored 0-6 with half point increments. The test has six sections, the last being a research section, and the duration of the test is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes. There is no new data on what test scores students will need to be accepted into certain schools because the scoring has changed so recently. Now, a scaled score of 150 (on each section) is considered to be an average score. See more score averages from the Educational Testing Services (the creator and administrator of the GRE) here. Understand test directions: On the GRE, time is precious, and you can save loads of it by learning the section directions before the test. Take practice tests: This is everyones first tip to performing better on any standardized test, mainly because it works. Taking practice tests can help your brain mold its thinking around the structure of the GRE and improve your speed. But, be careful about the test prep materials you use because most are outdated. See question types and further materials from the ERT here. Try to make your practice tests as similar to the real GRE as possible. Instead of practicing 30-minute sections at a time, try to practice the entire test in one sitting. Take your tests every Saturday morning around the same time you will take the GRE. Spreading out your studying can help your brain retain the information you learned while practicing, instead of just memorizing it. Its the same idea as studying in smaller increments for a test as opposed to pulling an all-nighter and cramming the day beforeand we all know which one is more beneficial. Try doing this for at least 12 weeks, and you will begin to see significant improvements. Use a GRE study book: They are very easy to find, although most can be expensive. The books will help you recognize patterns and common traps on the GRE. Find the most recent edition of the book to reflect the August 2011 changes. Work with a one-on-one GRE Tutor: Finding out where you struggle is the first (and easiest) step to improving your GRE score. Anyone can do that by taking a practice test. But, to significantly improve your score, you will need to improve in these areas. Thats the real challenge to raising your GRE score. A one-on-one tutor can give you the in-depth training and explanation you may need to improve in your problematic areas. Then, you can work to fine tune your skills in other sections. Taking a GRE prep class can help, but only a tutor can tailor each session to your specific needs. In New York City, GRE tutorsare our most requested tutors. First test in each section: Previously, the first 10 questions in every section were the most important because those would determine your scoring bracket. If you answered all 10 correctly, you would enter the highest possible scoring bracket, and from there, your score could only drop marginally. However, the new GRE is slightly different, although it still offers a tiered scoring system. There are multiple tests in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. The first test determines your scoring bracket, and the difficulty of the questions in the following tests are determined by your performance on the first test. The scoring brackets are not as significant as they previously were. But, entering a higher scoring bracket early can ultimately improve your score. Answer every question: There is no penalty for an incorrect answer on the new GRE. Review high school math: By the time youre 22, you may want to forget just about everything you did, wore and listened to in high school. But, for the GRE you at least need to remember your algebra and geometry. Taking practice tests/questions or reviewing basic algebra/geometry books could help you. See math an updated math review from the ETS here. Make dictionary.com your homepage: Because you are going to need to know the weirdest, strangest, most-obscure, never-will-be-used-in-context vocab words out there for the GRE verbal section. Read as much high-brow literature as possible, and constantly check dictionary.com for definitions of words youre unfamiliar with. Subscribe for dictionary.coms word of the day. And start doing this early because you cannot grow your vocabulary overnight. Know writing topics: The writing section measures your ability to form an argument for or against a topic. You will be scored on your use of examples, development and support, organization, language fluency and word choice. See possible topics from the ETS here. Also, you can write a practice essay and submit it for scoring here.
Making Your Quiet Voice Heard at Work - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Making Your Quiet Voice Heard at Work - Introvert Whisperer Making Your Quiet Voice Heard at Work Photo by rawpixel / Unsplash Being an introvert in an extrovert-dominated workplace can be difficult. You might feel pressure to live up to everyone elseâs level of social interaction. Perhaps the open floor plan in your office makes it difficult for you to be productive. Maybe working with your extroverted boss sometimes feels tedious and exhausting. There are many difficulties introverts potentially face at work. Luckily, there are a few tips and strategies you can employ to make sure that your managers and co-workers recognize the strengths of introverts rather than pushing for everyone to be extroverted. Letâs take a look at some advice for introverts in the workplace: Use Body Language Using your body language to convey confidence is a great way to make a presence for yourself in the office. Do you ever find yourself at your desk with your shoulders hunched over and head down, purposely avoiding people as they walk by? Good posture and eye contact can go a long way in letting others know that you are friendly, collaborative, and have valuable ideas and insight, even though your voice likely isnât the loudest in the room. When youâre in meetings, show that youâre an active and engaged listener by sitting up straight in your chair and looking at the person whoâs talking. Donât look down at your lap the whole time or sit by yourself off in a corner. These things may seem small, but they can make a big difference in how youâre perceived in the office. Practice Makes Perfect Speaking up in group situations is often a cause of anxiety for many introverts in the workplace. Generally, one of two things happen when an introvert speaks up. In some situations, you speak so infrequently that when you do speak, people listen. But thatâs not always the case. Sometimes, quietness is seen as weakness, and you get interrupted or ignored. If you need to conquer your public-speaking nerves, try practicing what you want to say ahead of time so when the time comes, you can deliver your words with authority and confidence. Itâs harder to interrupt or ignore someone who speaks with authority and without stammering or stumbling over their words. Since many introverts know itâs easy to do those things when youâre nervous, practicing ahead of time can be a lifesaver (or job saver) when it comes to public speaking. Utilize Screens If you, like many introverts, tend to be reserved in person, it might feel more comfortable to participate more fully in online spaces like office chats or email threads than big group meetings or casual office chat in the break rooms. Sometimes, the latter can contribute to workplace anxiety for more introverted employees, leading them to feel unnecessary amounts of stress. If your office doesnât yet have any online communication platforms other than email, consider asking your boss or manager to implement one and tell them why it would benefit you and others who share a similar working style. 5 Myths (and Realities) About Study Abroad
5 Myths (and Realities) About Study Abroad Studying abroad is a popular pastime for many college students. Living and learning in a foreign country can provide you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in an unfamiliar culture while also earning college credit, meeting new people, and traveling. It also allows you to increase your confidence. Despite these benefits, many students still choose not to participate in study abroad because of intimidating information they have heard from others. Here are five myths (and realities) about study abroad: 1. Its too expensive Study abroad may seem expensive at first, but when you begin to evaluate program options and costs, you might just change your mind. Many universities offer exchange programs, in which students pay their regular tuition, but attend a school abroad. Additionally, students can select housing and meal plans that may be comparable to or even less than what they pay at home. In some study abroad programs, students pay the tuition of the foreign university, which may be less costly than your home college. To study abroad, you will need to pay for round trip airfare, which can be expensive. Keep in mind that you can apply your financial aid to some study abroad programs, and remember that there are also study abroad scholarships that can help students cover extra expenses. Speak with your schools study abroad office to discover such funding opportunities. 2. I must be able to speak a foreign language Another common myth about study abroad is that students must speak the language of the country where they intend to study. In reality, there are many study abroad programs where the foreign institution teaches courses in English. Although it can be helpful to speak the home language, many students learn to do so by interacting with people in the country they visit. Some students also choose to sign up for language immersion programs while abroad. If you are uncomfortable with not knowing the language, remember that there are several English-speaking countries where study abroad is very popular, such as Australia, England, and Ireland. Here are five tips to help you learn a foreign languageif you do choose to study abroad and want to learn the language of the country you are visiting. 3. Ill lose an entire semester or year This myth about study abroad programs is simply not true. With the variety of study abroad options available at most colleges, many majors can go abroad without delaying their graduation dates. First, meet with your academic adviser to determine when it would be best to study abroad. Many schools have even created study abroad programs whose credits align perfectly with their major requirements. To avoid delaying your graduation or losing a semester, it is imperative that you carefully time your study abroad experience. After speaking with your adviser, consult with the study abroad office about programs that fit your scheduling needs. If your major is very rigid, perhaps you can go abroad in the summer or during winter break. 4. Study abroad is like a vacation One popular belief is that students act irresponsibly while abroad and away from their daily lives. While some students do shirk their responsibilities while studying abroad, many others take this experience seriously without sacrificing fun. Read thesetips on how to best study for a test. Students may not only take classes abroad that require quite a bit of studying, they may also be hired for internships. They might join university clubs, travel to nearby sights, or do research with faculty members. 5. Non-traditional students cant study abroad Many non-traditional students including individuals who are returning to college, transferring from two-year institutions, maintaining a family life, or studying in the United States as international students attend school each year. As these populations grow, so too do the study abroad options available to them. If you are a non-traditional student, dont just dismiss the idea of studying abroad. Instead, speak with a study abroad coordinator, express your concerns, and find out what options will suit your needs. These are only five of the common myths (and realities) about study abroad, but there are many more. If study abroad has piqued your interest, investigate it with a knowledgeable person at your college or university. They can help you demystify the experience, debunk any additional myths about study abroad, and connect you with the study abroad options that best fit your situation.
